Rehearsals

Practices are held in the St Marks Church Hall, Vincent Terrace, Opawa on Wednesday night 7.30 ­ 9.30 pm during school term time. Please ensure you are on time and ready to sing by 7.30pm. These sessions are usually a combination of vocal warm-ups and exercises followed by learning and polishing our repertoire. There may be occasions (for example before a performance) when extra rehearsals are required.

The Joining Process

If you think you would be interested in joining Global Voices, please first email us at the address below. The choir usually has 2-3 intakes a year, depending on availability of spaces and balance between the parts. The usual process for joining is; potential new members come along before a rehearsal starts on a nominated date to have a voice check with our MD Helen Charlton. This will help Helen to ascertain the best part (soprano, alto, tenor or bass) to try you out in, and your suitability for the choir! Then you participate in regular rehearsals for 4-5 weeks before you are officially auditioned. You will be auditioned in a group situation with a small number of other members from each part, including your own, and you will sing one or two songs that you have learnt in your time with the choir. Helen will check to see that you can confidently hold, and learn a part, and can sing in tune! While you are attending the choir casually, you pay $5 a night to the Treasurer. If you feel that you would rather come along and listen for a night before starting the joining process, no problem! Contact us to arrange a suitable date.

Attendance

Once you have been accepted into Global Voices, there is an expectation of a minimum of a 70% attendance rate for rehearsals, or your place in the group is not guaranteed. Leaves of absence can be applied for to the committee, for situations like overseas travel or sickness.
